Ever So Helpful Advice from the Combox

...because I always get so much done when
the four of us leave the house together...
As a small business owner one of my favorite pieces of advice is that I should cancel our internet, forgo the two hundred dollars I just spent on buying a computer, and head down to the local library to use the internet there.  Of course, since we have one car I'd be walking there.  But hey, I could choose to walk three miles west or three miles east, each way.  And then I'd be trying to get my work done with Patrick in his wrap while wrangling Mae and answering Sadie's questions.

I've tried to picture how exactly that would work.  I'd be uploading the pictures of my products onto the computer, editing them, and then creating listings and posting them.  Then I'd respond to emails.  And hopefully I'd have time for the additional social media activity that is very much a necessary part of a small business these days.  Then I'd have to print out the sales receipts to bring home, rather than keeping track of the 18 orders I'm currently working on (the sale has been awesome!  Thank you guys!), on my computer screen.  I imagine printing isn't free either. All while making sure that Mae wasn't climbing the shelves to fling books from the rafters.  But that totally doesn't sound unreasonable. Maybe if I wasn't so darn lazy I'd have thought of it sooner.

I'd also like to thank my concerned reader for worrying about the $7.99 I spend each month on Netflix.

There are a lot of ways that I've managed to cut back our expenses.  That is part of my job too.  Gardening, couponing and repurposing items have all contributed to finding ways to stretch each dollar that comes through our hands over these past years.

Making 100% of the presents for holidays out of the materials I have on hand helps too.

Of course all of that takes... pretty much ever minute of time that I have (I sat down to check my computer because I have a headache to beat all headaches and found my readers lovely attempt at helpfulness).  Which doesn't leave a lot of time for making that library trek that would totally make me a frugal, responsible member of society.

But I'd like to thank my reader for assuming that they know all of this about me, from the 500-1000 words that I post here daily.  They must have received that extra copy of my husbands financial aid packet that I send out to all my followers.  And they must have their lives carefully managed if they have so much time to imagine that they understand my situation and feel the need to interject their ever so helpful advice.  Thanks Jan.  I really appreciate your wisdom. I especially appreciate how kind and charitable you were in offering your advice.

Now to get to work... something that's possible because of this computer sitting in front of me.

The only person you have to answer to about your family's finances is your husband...

Very true! :)

And as the prescription headache medicine kicks in I am feeling considerably less teary and upset! LOL!

Sewing de-stresses me too! It's a good thing it's my job!

Not only would you lose money and time in the long run, but you could compromise the financial data of your business. It's not a good idea to use any public computer for sensitive financial information. I would never do banking, let alone processing credit orders and such, at the library. I do love libraries, but not for that.

AND, added to all that, if your library is like mine, there is a one-hour time limit on the computer. Though if you want to walk back in the afternoon, you can have another hour! Yeah, people just don't really think sometimes.

You are doing an AWESOME job! I have been following your blog for years now, and I have always been impressed and inspired by the way you run your home. I can only imagine that the person who left you that comment must have been a troll, because no one in their right mind and with any ounce of reason would say those things to you!

I'm surprised the commenter didn't suggest you cut out the electric. THAT would really be a big money saver. I know we spend a lot on that pesky electricity! LOL! I don't understand why some people come trolling around to your blog to make "helpful" comments.

Cam, ignore it! Jan is completely out of line, judging your finances like that. It doesn't even matter that her library-computer suggestion is laughable. Preaching to people about their finances--unles you've lent them money--is off-base. Take a deep breath.---Lucy

Oh please! Whoever thinks that you should use the public library is delusional! Buy your new computer and feel good about it! You deserve it :)

Sadly, when you have a blog and share parts of your life with the public, you can count on the occasional looney feeling entitled to make ridiculous comments. You just have to let it slide and take it for what it's worth... which is nothing. Don't even publish the comment, and certainly don't waste your time responding to this kind of thing.. it makes them think their silly notions are important.

God bless!

I second the time limit! There is no way you can run an online business with only one hour/per day (some places it's three, if you're lucky). How incredibly thoughtless.

People think that there should be an easy button. That should live in a modern society and function in it without any basics like a phone or a television. And yes, I include television. You can get more news and weather information from a tv than a radio these days. Most radio is either political talk or music.

BTW I hope you've got someway to back up your files. Wouldn't want your computer to die and loose all that stuff.

I'm with the crowd on this one, ignore the loony criticisms.

The one thing I have learned in my life is to ignore well meaning and just plain nasty criticisms because they come from people as fallible as I am and I prefer to live by my own successes and errors rather than by theirs.

You do so much for your family-- feel GOOD about the new tools (like the computer) and ignore the peanut gallery.

I would have totally suggested using the public library to save money, if I didn't have three small children myself and know how impossible that would be. (If I don't pick out my books ahead of time and put them on hold, I know I won't be able to check anything out that's not in the children's section!) Good suggestion, just not something that would work for you!

It definitely wasn't the suggestion that bothered me! It's definitely a suggestion I can see someone coming up with (although not great for a business owner because of privacy issues and time constraints). It was the tone that the entire suggestion was given in that was downright rude!
